Where Do Ideas Come From

Raj,
Your question, "where do ideas come from ", leads us to a very vast territory of philosophy, both Indian and western. Philosophers belonging to various schools and camps of philosophy have dwelt upon this problem in depth and the debate is still going on, but they have failed to reach a unanimous conclusion. However, I attempt to summarize them very briefly here:
A. Hindu Philosophy: According to the Hindu philosophy, the human body is the rarest in the organic world called sattvika (as also in other religions and philosophies) and made up of 25 basic elements - 5 gross primordial elements (Panch Tatva), 5 subtle primordial elements (Tanmatras) 5 organs of perception (Gyanendriya), 5 organs of action (Karmendriya), mind (manas), reason (Buddhi), individuation (Ahankara), life force or vitality (chetan or pran) and Atma
There are several differences in the aforesaid categorisation among the 6 different schools of Hindu philosophy, especially the Kapil Sankhya philosophy and Vedantic philosophy as mentioned differently at different places in the Vedas, the Upnishadas, the Gita and the Mahabharata. The Gita generally quoted Sankhya.
Out of these constituents mind, reason and individuation are responsible for giving birth to ideas. However, some Rishis categorize mind and reason as different with reason being superior and beyond mind, whereas some other Rishis stress that they are the same and mind performs the dual function of mind and reason both.
When something is perceived by organ of perception, mind receives it, and after classifying, it sends to reason , which processes it to decide what is good and what is bad. In developing (making vyakaranam) anything the reason has often to conceive ideas (make sankalpam and vikalpam). The Gita also differentiate between two kinds of reason - pure reason and practical reason. ( German philosopher Immanuel Kant also says so and has devoted two books on it). The origin of ideas is pure reason. Hindu philosophy adds one more thing. It says that reason is a bodily faculty just like mind and so it can be sattviki , rajasi and tamasi according to previous actions, hereditary impressions, education, etc.

B. Western Philosophy :
It has four schools on this subject:
Rationalism -
1- philosophers like Plato explained that perception may be deceptive and hence is unreliable. Immutable and unchanging knowledge can be obtained only from pure reason, and not from perception. Thus ideas originate from pure reason. He talked about the world of ideas.
Cartesian (propounded by Descartes, a French philosopher) modified Plato's explanation by saying that a clear and distinct idea comes from pure reason accessible by pure reason. Human reason itself has capacity to generate a clear and distinct idea. The concept of the world of ideas is nonexistent.
2- Empiricism- the protagonists of this school explained that the source of true knowledge is not reason but experience. Newton's idea of gravitational force originated from his experience when an apple fell on him.
3- Kant theory - Immanuel Kant , German philosopher combined both the above theories of rationalism and empericism by claiming that a true idea comes from reason and arises only with experience
4- Pragmatism - By giving various examples they stressed that an idea is true till it is effective in producing benefits.
C.Scientific Explanation : The scientists and biologists do not agree that mind and reason (feeling of heart) have any independent or separate existence. So an idea also originates in mind. When a man experiences something through an organ of perception, mind recieves it, compare it with the large data already stored in mind through past experiences and comes to generate an idea. When an apple fell on Newton, mind received an experience. His mind tallied it with his past experiences and knowledge and thought that nothing goes to something else unless it is pushed or pulled. So the idea of gravitational pull came to his mind.
Conclusion: Being a student of science, I am more inclined to accept the scientific theory.

Voice of hatred and intolerance being promoted against liberal voice

Voice of hatred and intolerance being promoted against liberal voice
Tactically the Muslims may support  Salman Rushdie joining the growing chorus of protests by writers and poets against spread of “communal poison” and “rising intolerance” in India. for the time being, but strategically he will continue to be the permanent enemy of both the Islamists and the Hindutvawadi because after all they both are two faces of the same coin. It is an unprecedented development with about 20 eminent litterateurs having already returned awards, but with no effect on the Govt or the aggressive Hindutvawadis. A Muslim was killed in Dadri and a riot/arson was engineered in Mainpuri by spreading a false rumour that a cow was killed by the Muslims. Eminent writers have been killed simply because they express liberal and progressive views, which are opposed to theirs,  The Pakistani artiste Ghulm Ali's concert in Mumbai and Pune had to be cancelled and  for organising a function for the Pakistani ex Foreign Minister's book Sudhir Kulkarni's face was blackened. The Govt should have immediately condemn these incidents and taken ster actins against the perpetrators of crimes, but, on the contrary , the Cultural Minister  held a veiled threat against the writers . This proves that there is a well planned  design/ conspiracy to attack on democratic and all the cultural and civilizational fabrics to shape them according to their own regressive concept/ interpretation/mindset with divisiveness , intolerance and hatred as its core . The recent killing of progressive writers shows that they believe in ' eliminate if someone does not agree with them'. Where are we heading for ?                                           Modi ji is a habitually talkative gentleman and  talks a lot on a number of topics, but he maintained a deafening silence. After 15 days when confronted with tremendous pressure from various sides, he broke his silence expressing his sadness on this issue, but trying to shift his responsibility to the state governments, saying the centre has no role in it. Firstly, the central Govt has enormous power through MHA. At least he as the PM, the highest executive position, should have immediately condemned the incidents. It would have gone a long way in quelling the situation and his ministers, MPs and MLA would not have indulged in provocative statements/activities. It would have sent a good and positive message to the nation, especially the minorities that the Govt was there to safeguard them, but he played the same tactics what he had played during Gujarat riots.
Either Modiji is unable to discipline his war -mongering cadres out of fear or under pressure from his supreme leader, or under a design he speaks of 'sabka sath sabka vikas' and his cadres are left free to pursue an aggressive divisive agenda. After the PM statement gave a statement to condemn these incidents, Sanjay Raut, Shiv Sena leader rightly described itby saying ' it is not a statement of  Narendra Modi ji, it is a statement of a PM'. Thus he differentiated between his two faces.
The Hindutva forces, who claim to be the sole custodian of nationalism and patriotism, are worried that such controversy over these incidents will tarnish the image of the nation and discourage the inflow of FDI into the country , adversely impacting the national development. They demand those raising voices against these incidents not to do so for the sake of national prestige. What a genuine concern for the nation and what a skewed argument! Who can be more worried for foreign investment than Modiji? Then why is he not telling his men not to pursue a politics/agenda of hatred and intolerance  for the sake of national development and national prestige? For sake of foreign investment and vikas such barbarous acts cannot be allowed. It is a very strange logic / argument that the perpetrators of crimes are not being asked not to indulge in disruptive and violent activities but the defenders are being asked not to raise voice against these violence as it would bring bad name to the country. This is exactly what is said in :' marenge bhi aur rone bhi nahi denge'. Do they consider the people and governments of other countries  as moron that if these incidents are not protested, they will go unnoticed.Obama, the USA President had already warned against such fratricidal tendencies- they are already aware of such dangers.
It is pertinent to underline here that extremism knows no limit. Today the Hindutva forces are fighting against the Muslims. Suppose they win and establish a Hindu state in India as Muslims have Islamic states in many countries. Their fight will not end there. Various sects of Hinduism - Vaishnavites, Shaivites, Shakts,etc- will fight among themselves for supremacy as they fought bloody battles in past and as the Sunnis, the Shias, the Talibans, the Al Quida, the ISIS, etc are fighting  fratricidal wars for supremacy in the middle east areas. Such fascist forces will also try to expand the territory of their influence , causing tention in the area. Hence these forces must be resisted. One must remember that not to raise voice against the crimes against humanity is also a crime

Striking Similarities

Striking Similarities
On one side:
1- In France, when a cartoonist published a cartoon on Prophet Mohd, Islamist militants in a surprise attack killed almost all editorial board members of the paper which had published the cartoon. In Bangladesh, when a blogger wrote a blog critical of Islam, the Islamists killed him. ........................
2- The ISIS has declared showing a map that by 2020 all the Muslim states from Egypt to Palistine to Syria to Iraq to Arab to Iran to Afganistan to Pakistan including POK will come under the ISIS. By 2030, it has further claimed, that the whole world will be a Islamic state under ISIS.  ..............................
3- The Islamic militants are intolerant towards equality and freedom to weman whom they consider a machine to produce children.  ............. case of Malala and many others..................................
4- Islamic militants of Pakistan are strongly opposed to screening of Indian films in Pakistan.  ..............

On the other side:
1- In India, if painters like Hussain paint Hindu gods/ goddesses without clothes, they are threatened to be killed by Hindutva hotheads. If someone writes or speaks against their views, the Hindutva brigade brands them as traitors and bastards, and uses all the filthiest language against them.  .............................
2- The Hindutva Brigade has already a cocept of Brihad Bharat comprising all the land right from Afganistan to India to Bangladesh to Mynmar. The VHP has declared that by 2020 India will be a Hindu State, and by 2030 the whole world will come under Hindus with India as a Vishva Guru. ........................................ .
3- The Hindutva hotheads  are also intolerant towards equality and freedom to weman whom they consider a machine to produce children.  .................. cases of moral policing and recent statements.of some Hindutva Brigade leaders. ......
4- Hindutva forces are strongly opposed to cricket match with Pakistani team.  .....................

All these facts are well known to all, but I am reiterating them here to emphasise the striking similarities between the two sides with both being thirsty of secularists' blood and both seeing the same dreams exapansionism and hegemony. There may be some difference in the intensity of extremism due to their respective religious teaching, socio-religious invironment, etc, their mindset is same making them equally dangerous for the human soceity.

6 August at 09:40 via Mobile · · Anything that India produced in the field of literature, art, philosophy, science, language and grammar, theology, etc., etc., is 'saffron' in nature; and therefore, must be banned from being taught to the children ! This is the conclusion we have about our past !
Yugal Kishore Singh No, I do not agree with the aforesaid conclusion. Saffronites only believe in the retrograde aspects of our ' literature, art.......................... theology ,etc., etc.'

  • Namitanshu Vatsa The onlything that I argue is that every Indian must look at its great heritage with a secular view. Even religion should beseen in a scientific context, as a part of human development. Our children must know about that heritage though proper glimpses. I would not have our children to be an obscurantist in any way ! However, the short sighted politics in the name of secularism is hell bent upon apeasing hard-core Islamists who only believe in one 'qoum' of believers, and they hate the national identity of this country. From various conversations with several Muslims, I have realised that the concept of nationalism is being seen by the hard-lined Muslims as against themselves ! They require a separate primary education system to educate Muslim children to be a true muslim, rather, separated from all else. And this is now being alowed and facilitated through govenment aide. What type of society we are going to make for the coming generation ?

  • Yugal Kishore Singh Dinesh , I think Namintanshu has already given the reply. I need not give the meaning/definition of the word- you know it as I have used the word ( retrograde ) in the same meaning as a dictionary defines it : moving backward, having a backward motion/direction, inverse, reverse, retreat , etc. Archaically, we also use it for contrary, opposed , etc. It is used in biology, space & astrology and music with some other definitions. I believe in progressive interpretation with open-mindedness and I am not shy of critical and scientific appraisal of our heritage, history, tradition , literature, art ,etc. I do not criticise the display of the statue of the naked dancing girl, an artifact found in Mohenjodero as 'perverted and vulgar' , I am proud of but I do not blindly support and glorify everything which is written in the Vedas, and other scriptures simply because they are part of our 'rich and glorious heritage and tradition' , I believe in our rich tradition of tolerance towards other's religion, culture and view points, I do not support divisive and communal interpretation of our history, I do not glorify all actions, right or wrong, of all hindu kings / sants and oppose those of Muslim rulers/ mullahs, I do not support the Sanskritised Hindi in everyday use, so on and so forth. I believe in passing a correct all-inclusive and secular picture of our heritage and tradition to our coming generations and the world at large.

Breaking Mind Traps

  • Breaking Mind Traps  (Shannon Duncan)

A very good article ! It is 100% true. The most of Indian parents, mostly those of retrograde and feudal mindset, commit this sin by creating mind traps by imposing unnecessary believes in the name of tradition and values  which they have themselves never quetioned to try to know the truth. It would be a great service to the new generation, and the society and the nation at large, if the elders shun the habit of creating mind traps around their children. I also appeal to the young generation to break all the mind traps and think and act idepedently and adventurously to explore the immense potential what they have in abundance.

It is also true, religion too plays a major part, so proper education and inculcation of liberal thinking is equally important. I talked of feudal outlook as such with reference to parental control over children's development, and not of any feudal person
